Maryland Mesonet

The Maryland Mesonet is working with the City of Crisfield to install a state-of-the-art weather station in or near Crisfield in the summer of 2025. The Maryland Mesonet project is a collaboration between the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM) and the University of Maryland (UMD). The Crisfield station will be one of 70 weather stations strategically placed throughout the state of Maryland. Over 170 data points are collected each minute by the station, including temperature, wind speed, humidity, barometric pressure, rainfall, and soil conditions.

The station will then transmit the data in real-time to improve situational awareness to the public and decision-makers. An archive of the data will be kept at the University of Maryland and made available to researchers and the general public for identifying trends and weather driven cause/effect patterns; ultimately contributing to the resilience and safety of the Crisfield community. The Crisfield station, combined with other nearby stations, will also support various sectors in the region, such as agriculture, education, utilities, energy, environment, forest/wildlife management, transportation, and tourism.

The approximate cost of the station is $60,000 via a grant from the Maryland Department of Emergency Management (MDEM). For more information about the Maryland Mesonet project and to access real-time weather data please visit the Maryland Mesonet website: mesonet.umd.edu
